I have always wanted to try Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney’s Animal Kingdom but never got around to it before I found out about my gluten sensitivity. Today I decided to give it a whirl after seeing that they have a gluten free pulled pork sandwich!
If ordering on the app, you can find this option by selecting the allergy friendly menu and choosing the “smoked pulled pork sandwich. The description states that it is served “on an allergy friendly bun topped with coleslaw and served with signature baked beans or fresh fruit.”
I will start off by saying this was a filling meal! The quality of the meat was amazing as well! The bun was not a typical gluten-free bun that crumbles as soon as the wind blows. It had more of a tough, chewier consistency but wasn’t as dry and crumbly as usual which I appreciated. That being said, I did have to go back and pick up two barbecue sauces (see picture below for ingredients) because it needed some extra flavor and was on the drier side without it. I also added some of the coleslaw to the sandwich for a different texture. I highly recommend adding the sauces and coleslaw to this sandwich because it really takes it to the next level. I will definitely come back for this sandwich in the future!
I personally did not eat the baked beans, so I gave them to my mom. She really loved the flavor but felt that her batch might’ve been a tad undercooked as the onions and beans were more firm than she would expect. The coleslaw was great on the sandwich but on its own it could’ve been a bit more flavorful or had more sauce. To make this meal perfect, I would’ve rather had fries as my side. They do serve fries at Flame Tree Barbecue, so I should be able to order it with fries instead of baked beans in the future (with an up charge I’m sure). Overall, I recommend this for gluten free barbecue enthusiasts and those who are tired of crumbly buns!
