Kona Cafe has been one of my family’s favorite Disney restaurants for a long time. From birthdays to special events, we love treating ourselves to some tonga toast for breakfast! Before I was diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity, I also took part in the toga toast but even now, I can still enjoy a delicious breakfast at the Kona Cafe (but Disney, if you see this PLEASE make gluten free tonga toast)! On our most recent trip, my sister with severe egg, mustard, and tree nut allergies even felt comfortable to order breakfast at a restaurant for her first time EVER here, which was so exciting!
Upon being seated, we were given allergy-friendly menus, pictured below. Since my sister was nervous about eating there with her allergies, the chef came out an reassured us that there would be no cross contamination on the allergy waffle maker. She also brought out paper plates, napkins, utensils, cups, and pre-packaged syrup for her to use since there can be cross contamination on dishes that were not washed thoroughly. They really went above and beyond (*cough cough* unlike Topolino’s Terrace at Riviera- read about our experience there by clicking here).
We both ordered the allergy-friendly Mickey waffles (I got ham as my side and she got fruit). They came with the signature allergy stick in it so we could be assured that our food was prepared in the right kitchen. The waffles were honestly better than I was expecting considering they are free from so many allergens. Usually when I get gluten free waffles from the store they are hard and crumbly. These were a little crunchy on the outside but still soft and sweet in the middle. I used both the regular syrup and the strawberry compote on mine, I only googled wether or not the compote was gluten-free and decided to take the risk because I forgot to ask our server about it but I would advise you to double check that it is safe before consuming. I did not get sick after eating it but that doesn’t always mean it is clear! The fruit and ham was also delicious, you can’t go wrong with either!
