If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies and are traveling to Walt Disney World, Erin McKenna’s is THE place to go for a treat. The bakery is completely free of dairy, egg, gluten, and soy, and all their goods are kosher, creating a safe place for some of those who usually struggle with finding options to fit their dietary needs. My sister has several severe food allergies (egg, mustard, and tree nut), and I am in the process of being diagnosed with Celiac disease. We were both able to enjoy a treat worry-free! That being said, make sure to double check with an employee about your specific restrictions to make sure you can safely eat there before ordering. My sister ordered a strawberry shortcake cup and I was feeling the savory vibes so I ordered a pizza bomb. Our total came out to just over $25 which is definitely above average but considering it is specialty food in a tourist area, I can’t complain too much.
Let’s start off with our favorite: the strawberry shortcake cup! As you can see pictured below, it is a parfait of graham cracker crumbs, sweet strawberry filling, and frosting. It is just as delicious as it is aesthetic! While there is no cake in the traditional sense, all the right flavors are there! The graham crackers almost give it more of a cheesecake or pie vibe. It’s a great treat option without being too sweet or heavy. We highly recommend you give it a try!
Next up we have the pizza bomb. My critiques around this mostly result from my false expectation of what I thought this would be. This is no fault of Erin McKenna’s, but when I ordered I was imagining something similar to a stromboli (but with plant based cheese of course). However, it was more along the lines of a biscuit with peppers and Italian seasoning- it was also slightly cold, which I didn’t expect. With this being my first time going, I do not know if you can ask for your treat warmed, but I will make sure to ask next time I go! I think warming the pizza bomb would be the way to go if possible. Overall, if you go into it knowing what you’re ordering, I think it’s great! Would I say it tasted like pizza? No. But it did have flavor, and I didn’t notice it being super crumbly or gritty like some gluten-free baked goods can be.
That’s all we tried on this trip, but I know we will be back soon! Stay tuned for more content about gluten-free options around Disney and the Orlando area, this is just the beginning!
